OU football uses 28-point first quarter to beat OSU & more key stats from Bedlam (2024)

NORMAN — OU used a hot start to earn a 28-13 win over OSU on Saturday.

The Sooners (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) erupted for 28 points never surrendered their lead despite a second-half push by the Cowboys (7-4, 4-4 Big 12).

Here's a look at the game by the numbers:

OU dominates out of the gate

77: OU scored a touchdown just 77 seconds into the game via a 2-yard keeper by Dillon Gabriel. This tied for the fastest touchdown by the Sooners to start a contest this season. They took the same amount of time to find the end zone in their Week 1 win over UTEP.

2: OU wide receiver Jalil Farooq hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass to give his team a 14-0 lead with 9:44 left in the first quarter. It marked the third time this season the Sooners began a game with back-to-back touchdowns.

28: The Sooners used 28 plays to take a 28-0 lead over the Cowboys at the end of the first quarter. It marked OU’s largest lead over OSU at the end of the first quarter in program history.

299: OU recorded 299 yards of offense in the first quarter. It marked the highest total in the first quarter of a game in program history.

Sooners' defense keeps Cowboys contained in second quarter

3: OU safety Billy Bowman intercepted a pass with 12:32 left in the second quarter. This marked one of three first-half interceptions for the Sooners' defense, which finished with a season-high four INTs.

0: OU didn’t record any penalties in the first half. Its only one, an unsportsmanlike conduct call on Farooq in the first quarter, got offset and didn’t count against the team.

OSU offense slowly finds way in second half

61: Yards by the Cowboys in the opening quarter on just 19 plays.

423: Yards by OSU in the final three quarters. The Cowboys finished with 484 total yards and eventually surpassed the total yards of the Sooners, who finished with 436 yards.

4: OSU drives ending in OU territory without points.

102: Plays run by the Cowboys, a season high. Their previous high was 98 in the comeback win over Texas.

9,553: Career passing yards for OSU quarterback Spencer Sanders, moving him to second on OSU’s all-time list. He passed Brandon Weeden, who threw for 9,260 yards in his career. Sanders completed 36 of 67 passes for 381 yards and a touchdown.

40: Career interceptions thrown by Sanders, moving him to first all time in program history. He passed former Cowboy Toné Jones, who threw 39. Sanders threw three in the first half Saturday and one in the end zone with less than 6 minutes remaining. His four interceptions tied a career high he set in last season’s Big 12 title game loss to Baylor.

15: Carries by three OSU running backs for 56 yards, an average of 3.7 yards. Jaden Nixon led the way with 37 yards. The Cowboys were without starting running back Dominic Richardson due to an injury.

55: Yards for Brennan Presley on a reception early in the fourth quarter, a career long. His previous best was a 42-yard touchdown reception at Iowa State last season. Presley finished with eight receptions for 118 yards.

2: OSU receivers with more than 100 yards through the air. Braydon Johnson had seven receptions for 109 yards to join Presley.

OU's offense limps to the finish line

1: OU went 1-for-15 on third- and fourth-down conversion attempts.

135: After recording 299 yards of offense in the first quarter, OU got held to just 135 yards of offense in the final three quarters and failed to put any more points on the board.

6: OU earned its sixth win of the season on Saturday, making it bowl eligible. The Sooners have gained bowl eligibility every season since 1999.

Cowboys’ defense starts poorly, finishes tremendously well

28: Points allowed by the Cowboys in the first quarter, the most since they allowed 30 points to the Sooners in the second quarter of Bedlam in 2015. OSU lost that game 58-23 in Boone Pickens Stadium.

0: Points allowed by OSU after the first quarter. The Cowboys got stops on 12 straight drives and allowed just 137 yards after that terrible start.

1-14: OSU allowed just the one third-down conversion to the Sooners. OU was also 0 for 1 on fourth down, a play that was initially ruled a first down on a catch by Marvin Mims that was ruled short after an official’s review.

11: Tackles by Cowboys safety Jason Taylor II, tying a career best. The redshirt senior was everywhere, recording 10 solo tackles to go with an interception and pass breakup.

5: Interceptions this season by Taylor, with the one off Gabriel to end the first half putting him back atop the Big 12 leaderboard. Taylor now leads Kansas State’s Cincere Mason and Julius Brents, who each had an interception against West Virginia on Saturday to bring their total to four apiece.

Punters have big days

45.8: Yards per punt for Cowboys redshirt freshman Logan Ward. The Deer Creek graduate boomed three punts more than 50 yards, including a 63-yard kick. He punted nine times.

13: Yards on a punt return by Presley in the third quarter, the longest of the season against OU punter Michael Turk. The previous best this season was 6 yards in the Sooners’ loss to Texas.

63: OU’s Michael Turk delivered a 63-yard punt with 12:32 left in the third quarter. This marked a season-long punt by the redshirt fifth-year senior.
