What is the mascot of Gull Lake Michigan? ›

The school mascot is the Blue Devil.

The water quality of Gull Lake is excellent. A sewage system was completed around the lake in 1983. Water clarity, and perhaps quality, has improved considerably since that time. The water of Gull Lake is clear, although from a distance it appears to be emerald green due to the suspension of marl in the water column.

In 1939, the Chevrolet Motor Company donated a wolverine (as well as the cage to keep it in) to the University of Michigan. The as yet unnamed mascot arrived on campus in time for the season opener against Michigan State. It was apparently his one and only appearance in Michigan Stadium.

When SU was Salisbury State College, the Salisbury athletic teams were so often referenced as the SSC Gulls (C-Gulls), that the "Sea Gull" becomes the official mascot for Salisbury.

There are 3 species of breeding gulls that can be found in Michigan, however some are more common than others. Ring-billed gull, Larus delawarensis (Likely to nest on flat roofs.) Herring gull, Larus argentatus (common, especially around coastal areas.) Bonaparte's gull, Larus Philadelphia.

Present day Wildcat Willy was conceived between 1984 and 1989, when student Jay McQuillan was selected by hockey coach Rick Comley to use Willy as a way to enliven hockey games and bring spirit to NMU fans. McQuillan proved very dedicated to the mascot, detailing his experience in a 2007 “Horizons” article.
